ThirdSpace Theatre opened its first drama club as Windmill Young Actors in 2011. We now run sixteen weekly drama clubs for kids and young people in Brighton, Hove and Lewes. We offer more than just acting clubs, and we do more than just deliver acting classes and holiday clubs, we provide all-round training and comprehensive mentoring.
Our children and young people create ambitious theatre that is rooted in their own experiences. They are also given the opportunity to work with internationally celebrated scripts and playwrights of their own choosing.
We are more than just an acting club, we are inclusive and supportive, we provide a friendly and safe environment for our students to express themselves and explore ideas that they might find challenging or exciting.
We make theatre, and that’s all elements of it. Our students will be fully immersed in the real world of theatre and what it is to be part of an ensemble theatre company.
Our students not only work with a variety of internationally celebrated scripts and playwrights, they also have the opportunity to create original productions.
In 2024 we performed Let it Be a Tale at Brighton Dome and will be returning in May for the International Festival with Earth Teeth.
Our 2017 show Agamemnon won the Outstanding Theatre award in 2017 and we have since performed and sold out venues across Brighton including at Brighton Dome and BOAT (Brighton Open Air Theatre).
Our outdoor site specific shows BAKKHAI and Romeo & Juliet, (which was staged in a skatepark) were huge hits during Brighton Festival and have since been commissioned for future performances.
As well as these big public professional-standard shows, we also open the doors to our end of term shows. We pride ourselves on the quality of our productions, and these shows rehearsed and performed by our various drama groups are no exception. Most recently, we have worked closely with Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts and performed Zero for the Young Dudes!, Earth Teeth, and Beyond Words, which was our big end of term, full-school winter show. In 2024, we performed at the Rose Hill with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and at BOAT with Kite Tales.
Not to mention the other work that we engage in – including a theatre-in-education piece Letters Home and commissions for Leonardslee Lights and Brighton Lights.
We co-create work with our young people and through one to one mentoring we have empowered and trained them to take up creative paid work experience and leadership roles with us and other organisations. We have also supported them to successfully apply to university, prepare audition pieces and also to set up their own theatre companies. Our work is youth-focused and responsive to the needs expressed by our young people.
We work with kids and young people long-term to develop their talents and help them to realise their ambitions in acting and drama.
