Gain work experience as a Youth Drama Assistant in Brighton & Hove


ThirdSpace Theatre is offering a Council-funded paid mentorship placement to an enthusiastic young person aged 16-25. The successful applicant will assist in the tutoring of two Hangleton-based youth drama clubs and will receive on-the-job mentoring from Artistic Director, Tanushka Marah.

ThirdSpace Theatre is committed to making the arts more accessible for children and young people from all backgrounds, teaching drama, stage combat, and script writing in an out-of-school setting, as well as running holiday clubs. We currently run 17 clubs across Brighton, Hove, and Lewes.

We are a growing company and would like to meet ambitious young people who share our belief that the arts should be for everyone.

  • You would be working in two clubs in Hangleton (Brighton & Hove) – Senior group (ages 11-16) and Junior group (ages 7-11)
  • This is an assistant role with job-related training paid for by the company – e.g. First Aid, Safeguarding, Youth Mental First Aid Training.
  • Whilst not expected to teach classes on your own, you will learn all aspects of running a club and carry out various other tasks that are key to the smooth running of our theatre school including administration and research.
  • Hours: 4 hours a week during term-time (Mondays 3:45 – 5:45pm and Wednesdays 3.30pm – 5.30pm). Candidates will need to confirm their availability for these times.
  • Pay: £12 per hour (as above)
  • We are particularly interested to receive applications from those facing barriers to education, who are not in full time-education or employment, neurodiverse applicants, those with a minority ethnic heritage and those with knowledge of the West Hove Area.


You must:

  • Be available between 3:45pm – 5:45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays 3pm – 5pm during term time.
  • Be willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check.
  • Be willing to undergo training in First Aid, Youth Mental First Aid, and Safeguarding (paid for by ThirdSpace).
  • Be 16-25.

Ideally you should:

  • Have an interest in the arts / performing arts.
  • Be comfortable assisting groups of up to 30 young people, ages ranging from 7-16.
  • Have a positive attitude and great energy
  • Be able to work well as part of a team, taking initiative, and working with the team leader and teachers to deliver a great theatre arts experience to all students.
  • Be committed to diversity & inclusion.

  • Signing in students via online register when they arrive at the school, including latecomers.
  • Assisting the teachers during teaching.
  • Research
  • Helping to collect feedback and evaluation from students at the end of the club.
  • Attending one-to-one-mentoring sessions.
